During the summer of 2023, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao experienced an unprecedented surge in visitors, marking its best season to date. A total of 489,946 people flocked to the museum between June and August, surpassing all previous records and exceeding expectations. This remarkable figure represents an increase of 40,469 visitors compared to the summer of 2022 when the exhibition “Motion: Autos, Art, Architecture” was on display, and an impressive 44,799 more visitors than the summer of 2018, which was the previous best in the museum’s history.
The numbers for each individual month were equally impressive, with 106,418 visitors in June (305 more than in 2022), 165,418 in July (17,488 more than in 2022), and a staggering 218,087 visitors in August (22,676 more than in 2022).
In terms of visitor origin, 68% came from abroad, marking a 3% increase from 2022. France led the way with 17% of international visitors, followed closely by Italy, Germany, The Netherlands (each contributing 7%), and the UK at 6%.
Notably, August 16th emerged as the busiest day during this three-month period, with 8,949 visitors in a single day.
The cumulative number of visitors for 2023 now stands at 898,513, representing a 15% increase compared to 2022 and a 7% growth compared to 2018.
This remarkable success can be attributed in large part to the museum’s captivating special exhibitions, including “Oskar Kokoschka: A Rebel from Vienna,” sponsored by the BBVA Foundation (running until September 3); “Lynette Yiadom-Boakye: No Twilight Too Mighty” (available until September 10); and “Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now,” sponsored by Iberdrola (on display until October 8). These exhibitions have undoubtedly contributed to the museum’s growing appeal and its ability to attract a diverse and enthusiastic audience.
