Health and Travel: Medical Tourism

In recent years, I’ve noticed that medical tourism has gained popularity for people seeking affordable and advanced medical procedures by traveling to another country. One of the key reasons for this trend is that many Americans, including myself, struggle to afford the cost of certain medical procedures from local surgeons.

Medical tourism combined both of my needs, allowing me to undergo an important weight loss procedure while enjoying a “vacation” at the same time.

I experienced first-hand how beneficial medical tourism can be.

Having struggled with morbid obesity for most of my life, I sought out bariatric surgery as a solution but couldn’t afford it in the United States. Being morbidly obese wasn’t just about self-image or my interactions with others, it was a serious threat to my health and wakeup call that made me realize losing weight wasn’t an option, but a necessity. After carefully researching my options, I discovered medical tourism could be the key to accessing affordable healthcare.

I did extensive research on medical tourism, comparing various destinations and facilities. I read reviews and considered all of the costs involved.

Ultimately, I chose to have my surgery done through Elias Ortiz & Company, a medical tourism facilitator located in Tijuana, Mexico. They were known for their expertise in bariatric surgery, affordability, and comprehensive care packages.

Traveling to Tijuana not only allowed me to undergo the surgery I desperately needed but also offered me an unforgettable travel experience.

Tijuana is known for its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and stunning coastal views. Tourists can explore the historic cities and enjoy the local delicacies, making any medical journey feel like a vacation.

Medical tourism is a global industry, with popular destinations including India, Thailand, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates. These countries offer serene settings, skilled medical professionals, and strong healthcare systems.

Often, medical tourism packages, like the one I chose to use through Elias Ortiz & Company, include travel, accommodation, surgery, and after-care. This all-inclusive care package not only helped me receive bariatric surgery at the fraction of a cost compared to the United States and Canada, but it also made my travel experience convenient and stress-free.

For me, the entire experience was empowering and transformative. I not only received the life-changing surgery but also enjoyed experiencing Tijuana and creating new relationships with other former patients and medical staff. It feels like it gave me a new perspective on both my health and the medical tourism industry.

If you’re considering medical tourism, I highly recommend that you research it thoroughly. Look for reputable medical tourism facilitators and read reviews, the good and the bad, from previous patients. Verify the credentials and experience of the surgeons and medical staff. Understand all of the costs involved by comparing the expenses of procedures in different countries, including travel, surgery, accommodation, and after-care, and factor in currency exchange rates and any additional fees.

You should also ensure that you have the necessary travel documents. For American Citizens, traveling to Tijuana for medical tourism might be less hassle since Elias Ortiz & Company promotes that you don’t necessarily need a passport. Instead, you can use a driver’s license and birth certificate to re-enter the U.S. through a separate line designated for this purpose. However, having a passport could still be useful and might make the process smoother, but this might not be the case for every medical tourism facilitator though. Always ensure that you have the necessary travel documents for your specific destination, whether they are passports or Visas, or any health and vaccination records.

I also recommend that you plan your stay by arranging for accommodation close to the medical facility. I got to experience a 5-star stay in the Grand Tijuana Hotel, as part of my all-inclusive package.

Thanks to medical tourism, I could finally get bariatric surgery, and I ended up losing over 200 pounds. Following my immense weight loss, I feel a lot more confident in my body and motivated to take control of my life and health. I also felt inspired to empower others to consider medical tourism for bariatric surgery and how it can be the solution they need for immense weight loss and improved health.
