Adventure Canada, known for its extraordinary expeditions, is proud to feature not only incredible destinations but also remarkable individuals who join these journeys to share their expertise and enrich the experience of travelers. Each Adventure Canada expedition is accompanied by a handpicked crew and a selection of special guests carefully chosen to enhance participants’ insight and knowledge of the places they will explore. While the cast of characters varies from one departure to another, here’s a glimpse into some of the exceptional people who grace Adventure Canada with their presence, knowledge, and craft.
Researchers-in-Residence:
Thomas Stone – A first-time Researcher-in-Residence with Adventure Canada, Stone is a marine biologist who grew up on the Southern Coast of England, fostering a profound love for the ocean. Recently completing an integrated masters’ degree in biology at the University of Oxford, Stone’s expertise lies in developing a method to accurately estimate the body size of seals using drone imagery. His research aboard the 2023 Iceland to Greenland: In the Wake of Vikings expedition focuses on surveying arctic marine mammal population health and the impacts of climate change, providing crucial data for conservation strategies and understanding how pods respond to environmental pressures.
Jackie Dawson – A returning Researcher-in-Residence, Dawson is a Full Professor at the University of Ottawa and the Canada Research Chair in Environment, Society, and Policy. Her research concentrates on the Arctic and its complex interactions with climate change and sea ice reduction, affecting both the environment and the cultures of the region. As the Scientific Director of ArcticNet, Dawson is recognized as an international expert in Arctic shipping, tourism, and oceans governance. She will be gathering data on Arctic shipping risks during the Greenland and Wild Labrador: A Torngat Mountains Adventure expedition to address the challenges posed by sea ice recession and increased shipping traffic in Arctic waterways.
Artists, at the height of their craft:
Manasie Akpaliapik – A gifted Inuit Master Carver, Akpaliapik hails from Arctic Bay in Nunavut, Canada. With over 45 years of experience as a carver and sculptor, his art vividly depicts Inuit legends, contemporary social issues faced by Inuit communities, and the beauty of his heritage. Akpaliapik’s work is featured in collections across Canada and internationally, and he has been recognized for his contributions to the Inuit art community. Joining the Greenland and Arctic Canada: High Arctic Explorer expedition, Akpaliapik will share his craft and knowledge with Adventure Canada travelers.
Margaret Atwood – An esteemed Canadian author, Margaret Atwood is an enduring special guest on Adventure Canada expeditions. Renowned for her influential novels, poems, and essays, Atwood is one of the few recipients of the Booker Prize twice, along with receiving numerous other prestigious awards. Having sailed on over 12 expeditions, she finds inspiration during her travels and even penned the short story “The Stone Mattress” aboard an Adventure Canada voyage. Atwood has recently sailed on the Iceland to Greenland: In the Wake of Vikings expedition and will join the Greenland and Arctic Canada: High Arctic Explorer expedition in 2024. As a special guest, she shares onboard presentations while immersing herself in the wonders of expedition travel.
