The Kurt Vonnegut Museum & Library (KVML), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of renowned writer Kurt Vonnegut and promoting free expression and decency, is thrilled to announce an upcoming live discussion event. Dr. Mark Vonnegut, a respected author, physician, and son of the legendary Kurt Vonnegut, will engage in an enlightening dialogue at Tufts University in Boston on October 12th, 2023.
This event will focus on the enduring relevance of Kurt Vonnegut’s advocacy for free speech and the principles of free expression. Dr. Mark Vonnegut will explore the profound connections between free speech, literary excellence, healing, and human relationships. “There is a profound connection between free speech, literary ambition and excellence, healing and human relationships,” said Dr. Vonnegut. “What else is there to talk about?”
In 2022, KVML introduced the Vonnegut USA program, designed to foster engagement with both avid Vonnegut enthusiasts and new readers across the nation. This initiative creates educational experiences for diverse audiences, spanning from schools to libraries, book festivals, veterans’ gatherings, and discussions for seniors. The KVML’s efforts include sending complimentary copies of Kurt Vonnegut’s iconic work, Slaughterhouse-Five, to high school students in states where the book faces bans. Additionally, the organization collaborates directly and indirectly with students, empowering them to voice their opinions.
Beyond the exploration of Kurt Vonnegut’s legacy, Dr. Vonnegut will also discuss his recent release, The Heart of Caring: A Life in Pediatrics, highlighting how writing can serve as a tool for healing. Following the discussion, a book signing with Dr. Vonnegut will take place.
Founder of the KVML and author of Breaking Down Vonnegut, Julia Whitehead, expressed the program’s spirit: “The Vonnegut USA Program is a dynamic journey fusing literature, community, and critical conversations. We hope our audiences will join us at our national programming events and celebrate Kurt Vonnegut’s satirical wisdom and empathic spirit.”
Vonnegut USA Boston: An Evening with Mark Vonnegut on Free Speech will unfold at Tufts University, proudly sponsored by the Tufts University Experimental College. The evening will commence with a private reception hosted by Dr. Mark Vonnegut, preceding a public program. A book signing event for Dr. Vonnegut’s latest work, The Heart of Caring: A Life in Pediatrics, will follow. Attendees can purchase tickets or contribute towards making tickets available for students at KVML.org.
