San Diego Zoo Safari Park Introduces Denny Sanford Elephant Valley

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has commenced construction on a groundbreaking project, marking the most significant transformation in the 50-year history of San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The upcoming Denny Sanford Elephant Valley will redefine the core of the Safari Park, converting the existing elephant environment into a dynamic savanna for exploration. This new space aims to create a closer bond between visitors and elephants, fostering empathy, understanding, and admiration for these majestic creatures, while also inspiring a passion for wildlife.

Paul A. Baribault, President and CEO of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, expressed enthusiasm, saying, “We are thrilled to announce Denny Sanford Elephant Valley—a first-of-its-kind immersive experience for visitors, to further connect the vital work happening here in San Diego to the collaborative elephant conservation initiatives we support in the field.”

Surrounded by elephants from various angles, including an overhead walkway for observing the herd’s movement from below, guests will gain insight into elephants’ essential role as ecosystem engineers and their intricate social interactions. Elephant Valley will illuminate the leadership role that San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance holds in wildlife conservation, emphasizing partnerships, cultural connections, and coexistence between humans and elephants.

A two-story lodge, inspired by African safari destinations, will stand at the heart of Elephant Valley. Serving as a central gathering place, it will offer educational opportunities about the region’s wildlife, allowing visitors to observe elephants at expansive watering holes. The lush vegetation within Elephant Valley, meticulously curated by a team of experts, mirrors the sights, sounds, and fragrances of African grasslands. The expansive habitat will enhance the elephant herd’s experience by incorporating innovative features that replicate the African savanna throughout the year.

Lisa Peterson, Executive Director of San Diego Zoo Safari Park, emphasized the importance of this project in light of elephants’ vulnerable status due to factors like climate change, habitat loss, and poaching. African savanna elephants are currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The project aims to provide a unique opportunity for people of all ages to experience nature and inspire a lasting commitment to elephant conservation.

Elephant Valley is backed by generous donors and long-time supporter Denny Sanford. The project, expected to conclude in 2025, is part of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s broader commitment to wildlife conservation and promoting a healthier world.
