Marvel at the awe-inspiring Devils Tower, Wyoming’s iconic geological wonder, where natural beauty, cultural significance, and outdoor adventures come together in a one-of-a-kind destination.

Wyoming’s Iconic Geologic Wonder – DEVIL’S TOWER

As you approach the towering monolith that is Devils Tower, you can easily imagine the alien mothership coming to collect Richard Dreyfuss, just as it did in the iconic 1977 sci-fi film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This awe-inspiring geological formation, located in northeastern Wyoming, stands 867 feet tall from base to summit and has been a source of wonder and inspiration for generations.

Devils Tower is an impressive example of an igneous intrusion, where molten rock cooled and solidified underground. Over millions of years, erosion has exposed the striking columns, creating a unique and mesmerizing landscape.

The columns are made of phonolite porphyry, a rare volcanic rock, and are remarkably symmetrical, adding to the tower’s otherworldly appearance. The formation is composed of hexagonal columns, some reaching up to 600 feet in height, which contribute to the tower’s distinctive, striated surface. This natural wonder is believed to be the result of a volcanic event that occurred around 50 million years ago, followed by the slow process of erosion that sculpted the tower into its current form.

Devils Tower is a world-renowned destination for rock climbers. With its unique columnar structure, climbers can test their skills on various routes, ranging from beginner to expert levels. To preserve the natural environment and respect cultural traditions, climbers are required to register for a climbing permit before embarking on their ascent.

For the less adventurous, but still eager to explore the area, the Tower Trail offers a 1.7-mile loop that provides stunning views of the monument from every angle. More adventurous hikers can tackle the Red Beds Trail and Joyner Ridge Trail, which offer longer and more challenging routes through the surrounding landscape, providing panoramic vistas of the tower and the picturesque Belle Fourche River Valley.

The Circle of Sacred Smoke sculpture, a beautiful Möbius strip created by Japanese artist Junkyu Muto, is located near the picnic area. This sculpture honors the cultural significance of Devils Tower to over twenty affiliated tribes. The continuous surface of the Möbius strip symbolizes infinity and unity, making it a fitting tribute to the sacred nature of the site.

During the summer season, visitors can join guided walks, short talks, and evening programs led by park rangers. These programs offer insights into the natural and cultural history of the area. Additionally, the surrounding landscape is home to various wildlife, including deer, bighorn sheep, and numerous bird species. Birdwatching and wildlife photography are popular activities for nature enthusiasts.

Whether you’re a fan of sci-fi cinema, an outdoor enthusiast, or someone seeking a deeper connection to nature and culture, Devils Tower has something for everyone.

Plan your visit and experience the magic of this remarkable landmark. Often combined with a regional tour that includes the iconic Mt. Rushmore, a trip to Devils Tower promises a memorable adventure filled with history and natural beauty.
